finger & Moon ~ embracing the Mystery

Page 3

I compare this to two lovers sharing love. Two persons in love with each other, they point to that single love in many ways, erotic and otherwise. They have, then, rituals of love. Even the words "I love you" is part of this ritual. The sharing of sexual enjoyment is a ritual, a means to relate with and share this love. As long as we are connected with the body, embodied ways of relating with the Mystery and one another will be part of our lives.

At some point, one can no longer take literally the pointers: that is, the pointers only point. I recall when attending a liturgical congregation a number of years ago, a creed would be recited each Sunday. I could not relate well to the creed, most of it did not make sense to me. I could not recite it all, for I believed to do so was being dishonest. Yet, how I saw the creed shifted. I came to see the creed as poetic. Poetry is a finger pointing to the Moon. Then, I came to see all religious ritual as poetic, a means to express the inexpressible, ways to sensitize us to the Mystery we live within, a Mystery we come to embrace, for the Mystery is the Presence embracing us.
